Columbus, Ohio (March 20, 2004) - Oakland University???s softball team was in action on Day 2 of the Ohio State Buckeye Invitational on Saturday with games against Michigan State and Northern Illinois. The Golden Grizzlies ended the day with one win and one loss with a 2-0 victory over the Huskies??? and a 10-0 loss to the Spartans. As a result, the team???s season record moves to 8-9. In Oakland???s first game against Michigan State, Spartan pitcher Jessica Beech threw her second no-hitter of the 2004 season. The Spartans were hot at the plate and ended the game in five innings scoring five runs in each of the third and fifth innings. Golden Grizzlies freshman Korey Schluckbier (Reese, Mich.) pitched the first three innings before junior Nicole Marzano (McHenry, Ill.) stepped in to finish the last two. Oakland was more successful in its second game against Northern Illinois where the team generated a total of six hits. Marzano was on the mound for all seven innings and gave up just three hits; five walks and struck out three at the plate. Marzano continued to have a hot bat throughout the game going two for two while leaving the yard in the fourth inning to give the Golden Grizzlies a 1-0 lead and the game winning run. Freshman Dana Blugerman (Holly, Mich.) drove in the insurance run in the seventh and was one for three. Toni Salo (Ortonville, Mich.), Jessica Scholey (Mississauga, Ont.), and Natalie Webb (Gleenwood, Ill.) each contributed with singles throughout the game. Oakland???s fourth game of the tournament that was supposed to be held on Sunday against the hosts, Ohio State, is cancelled due to bad weather. The Golden Grizzlies will next be in action on Wednesday, Mar. 24th when the team has their season home opener against Eastern Michigan. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
