Tanya Korniyenko (Almaty, Kazakhstan) became just the second female swimmer in Oakland history to become an All-American after swimming a successful day two of the NCAA Division I Women???s Swimming and Diving Championships. Korniyenko joins Georgia Kinsela in the record books as she placed 15th in the 100-meter fly event on Friday. Korniyenko placed 16th in the preliminaries Friday morning with a time of 1:00.07, giving her the rights to swim in the finals on Friday night. Korniyenko bettered her placing during the finals and finished in 15th place with a time of 1:00.12. As a result, Oakland stands in 31st place in the country with two points. On Thursday, Korniyenko was the first to enter the waters for Oakland and took on the nation's best in the 200-meter IM. Oksana Strelets (Kazakhstan) competed in the 50-meter freestyle and hit the wall at 25.97. She managed to outswim 23 competitors to finish 48th out of a pool of 71. Throughout the meet, all NCAA championship events are being swam in meters this year as it is an Olympic year. The meet concludes on Saturday where both Korniyenko and Strelets will compete. Strelets will swim the 100-meter freestyle event and Korniyenko will look to repeat her finals appearance in the 200-meter fly.
