Box Score San Francisco, Calif. (Nov. 27, 2004) ???C Sophomore
Nicole Piggott (Pewamo, Mich.) shattered her career-best points total Saturday night with 37 to lead Oakland University???s women???s basketball team to an 82-65 victory over the University of San Francisco to win the Odwalla Classic, hosted by USF. Piggott earned tournament MVP honors for her efforts, which included 10 points Friday night.
Anne Hafeli (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) also made the all-tournament team, registering 12 points in game one and 17 tonight, including five three-pointers. ???We talked at halftime (tonight) about defense winning the game and that was the difference for us tonight,??? head coach
Eileen Hilliard said of her team???s performance. ???We showed more patience on offense in the second half and the nice thing is that we never know who???s going to step up for us. Anne had 17, all in the second half, and Nicole just had an outstanding game.??? A wide open three-pointer by Hafeli with 15:37 to go in the game tied the match back up for the first time since intermission. Fittingly, Piggott???s free throws at 15:21 gave the Golden Grizzlies the lead for the first time in the second period. With under seven minutes to go in the game, OU went on an 18-0 run, sparked by nine points from
Petra Manakova (Prague, Czech Republic) that sealed the victory for the Golden Grizzlies. Piggott scored 13 of Oakland???s first 15 points to fuel the Golden Grizzlies??? offense, en route to 23 points in the first half alone. The Dons regained the lead for the first time since the opening bucket on two free throws by Toni Russell at 8:43. USF then went on a 6-0 run in less than a minute, prompting an OU timeout with just over three minutes to go. Oakland got some more help from Piggott in the final minutes of the stanza, including her fourth trey of the night with 21 seconds on the clock. LaShaunte Stephens, however, drained a jumper on the other end just as time expired to send the teams to the locker room with the score 38-33 in favor of the Dons. The two teams shot pretty evenly to start the game with USF taking the slight 53.8 to 51.9 edge in the category. Joining Piggot and Hafeli in double-digit scoring for the game were
Amanda Batcha (Waterford, Mich.) with 10 and Manakova with 11.
Jayme Wilson (Shawnee, Kansas) led the squad with six assists, while
Joya Puryear (Detroit, Mich.) chipped in a game-high four steals. Oakland shot just over 48 percent for the night, including hitting 12-of-22 from three-point range for 54.5 percent. The Dons shot 46.2 percent from the floor, but outrebounded OU, 32-27. Toni Russell led the way for USF with 23 points, while Mary Jane Krueger added 12 and Carter had 16. Krueger fell just short of a double-double with nine boards. OU stays in the Golden State this week for a Tuesday night match-up with St. Mary???s at 7:00 pm (Pacific).
