Rochester, Mich. (Sept. 26, 2003) ???C Oakland???s women???s tennis team had the advantage at the start of its match with Chicago State this afternoon, with the Cougars defaulting a doubles and singles match, but the Golden Grizzlies could not turn it into a win as the Cougars came up with a 5-2 non-conference victory. Oakland falls to 2-2 with the loss. Needing just one win to clinch the doubles point, Oakland came up short in both matches. The Golden Grizzlies best chance came at No. 1 doubles where the team of Brittany Maxey (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Lisa Pellafone (Rochester, Mich.) battled the entire match with their Chicago State foes. The OU pair had a one-game lead midway through the match, but Roberta Sowell and Christina Vlase came back at the end to take a hard-fought 9-7 win. Faced with having to take four of the five singles matches to win, Oakland could only manage to capture the match at No. 3 singles where Angela Trecola (Troy, Mich.) scored a 6-4, 6-0 win over Sowell. Lauren Sanchez-Murphy (Rochester Hills, Mich.) was involved in the only three-set match of the day at No. 5 singles, taking the first set in a tie break before falling to Colette Hurt, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-4). Chicago State managed to take other three matches in straight sets to take the win. Oakland will play again tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Stoney Creek High School in Rochester, taking on IPFW.
