Volleyball Falls At Bowling Green

Box Score Bowling Green, Ohio ???C Oakland???s volleyball team could not find its offensive touch here tonight while host Bowling Green had three players record double figures in kills as the Falcons downed the Golden Grizzlies 3-0 (30-17, 30-22, 30-22). Sara Miller (Jackson, Mich.) led OU with eight kills, but it was not enough as Oakland fell to 1-4 on the season. Bowling Green improved to 7-3. Oakland took an early 3-2 lead in game one on a kill from Miller, but Bowling Green responded with a 8-2 run and the Golden Grizzlies could not get back into the game. A kill from Patti Hunter (Macomb, Mich.) brought OU to within three at 8-11, but the Falcons scored five straight points to take control of the game. The two teams battled back-and-forth in the second game, with neither team able to put a string of points together early in the game. Another put away from Miller gave OU an 11-10 lead, but two straight points by BG on a kill from Dana Chapman and an OU hitting error put the Falcons back on top and they never trailed again. Oakland tied the game at 19-19 on a Miller kill and then found itself within two at 21-23 on a BG attack error. But the Falcons got hot and scored six straight points, led by three kills from Samantha Rennau, to take a two games to none advantage. Game three was much the same as the second. Bowling Green held the advantage most of the way, but Oakland hung tough and trailed by just a point at 17-18 after a kill by Heather Lippert (Walled Lake, Mich.) and a BG hitting error. The Falcons finally responded, scoring five straight points that gave them a five-point lead that OU could not make up. Oakland managed to hit just .071 in the match, putting away 27 kills compared to BG???s 55. After Miller, no other OU player had more than four kills. Lauren Bramos (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) reached double figures in digs for the Golden Grizzlies with 10, while Whitney Lane (Kentwood, Mich.) and Lippert added seven and six blocks respectively. Rennau and Melissa Mohr led all players with 12 kills for Bowling Green, while Chrissy Gothke had 14 digs to lead her squad defensively. Oakland will look for its second win of the season this weekend when it plays at the Western Michigan Invitational on Sept. 19 and 20. The Golden Grizzlies first game will be against the host Broncos at Noon on Friday.
