Oakland's softball team were left dry on the mound Sunday playing in the Ohio State Invitational. The Grizzlies dropped a pair of games 4-2 to the Buckeyes and Morehead State University during day two of the tournament. Oakland's record now falls to 5-13 after three weeks into the 2003 season. Oakland's first game of the day was against the Eagles where the Grizzlies fell victim in the fifth inning giving up two runs which led to the Eagles victory. Senior
Ericka Burns (Clinton, Ont.) hit a home run in the opening inning giving the Grizzlies the 1-0 lead. However, the Eagles were quick to tie the game in the third inning and get the go-ahead runs in the fifth.
Nina Catanzaro (Shelby Twp., Mich.) would look to put Oakland back in the game with a home run batted in the fifth however, the Eagles stayed on top of their game and scored another run in the seventh to hold off a Grizzly comeback.
Linnea Utecht (Oshkosh, Wis.) pitched the first four innings for the team while
Nicole Marzano (McHenry, Ill.) came in for the last three. In Oakland's second game against No. 18 ranked Ohio State, the team suffered another 4-2 loss. Oakland hit home first in the game scoring two runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Utecht and Catanzaro were the Grizzlies to touch home for Oakland and take the lead off a single base hit by Catanzaro and an Ohio State error. However, the 2-0 lead was as good as it got for Oakland when the bottom of the inning saw Ohio State bring home two runs to tie the game. Ohio State took the win in the fifth inning scoring two runs to leave the game at 4-2. With the win, the Buckeyes took the Invitational Title with a perfect 4-0 record. Oakland returns to action this Tuesday when they host Western Michigan at 1 p.m. at the OU Softball Field.
