Box Score Rochester, Mich. ???C Mike Helms (Detroit, Mich.) poured in 42 points here tonight, setting a new school record for points in a season along the way, as he led Oakland to a convincing 92-77 win over Southern Utah in men???s basketball action. The win gives the Golden Grizzlies a share of second place in the regular season Mid-Con standings going into next week???s Mid-Con Tournament in Kansas City. OU finishes the regular season with a 17-10 overall record and a 10-4 conference mark. Both teams came out shooting well to start the game, with both squads hitting over 50 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes of the half. The result was a number of lead changes, 11 to be exact, with no team holding more than a four-point lead for the first 15 minutes of the game. With the score tied at 29 with 5:29 left, it was the Golden Grizzlies that made the only significant run of the half. After a Southern Utah free throw, Helms, who scored 22 in the half, hit consecutive baskets that gave OU a 33-30 lead. He then hit a trey that started an 8-2 Oakland run that finished off the half.
Rawle Marshall (Detroit, Mich.) ended the half with a steal that he took the length of the court and slammed home with four seconds left that gave Oakland a 41-34 lead, the biggest lead by either team to that point. Southern Utah came out of the locker room and scored the first six points of the half to cut the lead to 41-40 on a jumper from Kevin Henry at the 17:43 mark. That would turn out to be as close as the Thunderbirds would get, as OU answered with a 9-2 run that put them up 50-42 on a three pointer by
John Floyd (Toledo, Ohio) with 15:10 to play. Oakland increased its lead to 13 points on a pair of free throws from
Pierre Dukes (Grand Blanc, Mich.) with seven minutes to go, but Southern Utah had one more run left in it. The Thunderbirds scored nine straight points over the next two minutes, cutting the OU lead to 70-66 on a Lubor Olsovsky free throw. But the Golden Grizzlies then went on a run of their own, 11-2, that made it 81-68 on a Helms jumper with a little more than two minutes left, putting the game out of reach for Southern Utah. Helms connected on 15 of 27 shots on his way to his 42-point effort, including 6-of-6 from long range.
Cortney Scott (Lansing, Mich.) recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Marshall finished with 14 points to go with five assists, three blocks and five steals. Marshall also wound up with a new school record, setting a new mark in steals in a season with 77. Jay Collins led Southern Utah with 11 points, with Donnie Jackson, Jordan Mulford and Kevin Henry all adding 10. Oakland will now take the next week to prepare for the Mid-Con Tournament that will be held in Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Mo. from March 9-11.
