Box Score Chestnut Hill, MA (Nov. 22, 2003)- If this afternoon???s game is any indication of what lies ahead for Oakland women???s basketball, then fans can expect good things for the rest of the season. Despite suffering a 68-60 season-opeing loss to Boston College, the Golden Grizzlies led for most of the game until a late surge by the Eagles in the final three minutes allowed them to survive a scare. Sophomore
Jayme Wilson (Shawnee, Kan.) led the way for Oakland with 25 points, tying her career high. Oakland finished 43 percent from the floor and 58 percent from three-point range as they came out shooting to take a four-point lead, five minutes into the game on a three-point basket by
Anne Hafeli (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), who was 3-of-4 from behind the arc. The two teams traded baskets for the next five minutes as Oakland fought to hold onto its four-point advantage. Boston College finally took its first lead of the game with just over 11 minutes to play in the first half with a three-point basket by Amber Jacobs. Wilson responded two minutes later with one of her nine three-pointers to give the Golden Grizzlies a 20-18 advantage. Jessalyn Deveny helped the Eagles regain the lead with a layup at the 2:34 mark, but Wilson responded on the next trip down the court with another trey. Senior
Sarah Yaksich (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) hit a layup with under a minute to play, giving Oakland a 34-32 lead heading into the locker room. Yaksich gave the Golden Grizzlies their largest lead of the game early in the second half on a layup that put the score at 41-34. After cutting the lead to five, Boston College forced an Oakland turnover on its next possession; allowing Jacobs to help bring her team back to within three. The Golden Grizzlies survived a mid-quarter run by the Eagles that saw their lead turn into a three-point deficit. Oakland countered with another three from Wilson as the back-and-forth battle continued. Junior transfer
Petra Manakova (Prague, Czech Republic), followed up with Oakland???s next four points to put the Black and Gold back on top. Fatigue finally set in with the young Oakland team, as Boston College converted on a steal by Deveny to break a 57-57 tie with just under three minutes to play and went on to reel off the games next eight points, putting any thoughts of an upset to rest. The majority of those points came from the free throw line as Oakalnd was forced to foul, sending Boston College to the line six times in the game???s closing minutes. Hafeli hit a three for Oakland with 13 seconds left to bring the team to within seven. But it was too little too late. Wilson helped keep Oakland in the game as she hit her first seven shots, six of those three-pointers. Hafeli and Manakova were the other two Oakland players to score in double figures with 11 and 10 respectively. Freshman
Bonnie Baker (Allen Park, Mich.) and
Nicole Piggott (Pewamo, Mich.) were scoreless as they shot a combined 0-for-6 in their first collegiate appearances, but it was no small task to start their college careers against a team that reached the Sweet 16 last season. The difference in the game came in points off turnovers. Boston College put up 19 off of 21 Oakland giveaways, compared to six points for the Golden Grizzlies off of 17 turnovers by the Eagles. Oakland will now turn its attention to Tuesday when they will face Central Michigan at 7:00 p.m. in the team???s home-opener.
