(Oct. 31, 2003) ???C Oakland???s volleyball team came out swinging in Kansas City tonight, taking the first game of its volleyball match at UMKC only to see the Kangaroos rally to take the match in four games. The Golden Grizzlies placed four players in double figures in kills, but it was not enough as UMKC prevailed 18-30, 30-26, 30-23, 30-27. Oakland fell to 4-16 overall and 3-7 in the conference while UMKC improved to 6-21 and 4-7 in the Mid-Con. Oakland hit .273 as a team in the first game while its defense held the Kangaroos to a -.043 mark as the Golden Grizzlies went on to easily take the game by 12 points. In game two OU put away 19 kills, but could not come up with enough to subdue UMKC as the Kangaroos came back to take a tight second game to square the match. After that the UMKC offense found its stride, hitting over .200 over the final two games while its defense, which came up with 13 blocks during the evening, held OU under .160 as the Kangaroos went on to take the win.
Heather Lippert (Walled Lake, Mich.) led Oakland with 13 kills and hit .308, with
Sara Miller (Jackson, Mich.) added 11 for the Golden Grizzlies.
Patti Hunter (Macomb, Mich.) and
Cortney Varterasian (Ypsilanti, Mich.) each added 10 kills for Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies came up with 11 aces in the four games, led by
Lauren Bramos??? (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) five. She also added 12 digs, with
Katie Lozier (Clinton Township, Mich.) coming up with 15 digs to lead the team. UMKC???s Lindsey Zerr led all players with 15 kills, adding four blocks for the Kangaroos. Sara Foster had 11 kills and eight blocks for UMKC, while Kim Freeman had 15 digs to lead the Kangaroos defensively. Oakland will complete its Mid-Con road swing with a match at Western Illinois on Sunday at Noon Eastern time.
