(Oct. 25, 2003) ???C Oral Roberts put away 45 kills and survived 10 service aces by Oakland as the Golden Eagles swept the Golden Grizzlies in Mid-Continent volleyball action here this afternoon, taking the games by scores of 30-22, 30-28, 30-18. Sara Miller (Jackson, Mich.) led Oakland with 13 kills, tying Ori Zuzic of ORU for game-high honors. The win lifted Oral Roberts to 15-12 overall and 7-2 in the Mid-Con while Oakland fell to 4-15 and 3-6. A pair of kills from Stephanie Linz (Okemos, Mich.) brought OU to within a point in the first game at 6-7, but Oral Roberts then outscored OU 9-3, getting a pair of kills from Zuzic, to take a commanding 16-9 lead. Linz made the game interesting late, serving three aces in four attempts to bring the Golden Grizzlies to within three at 22-25, but that was as close as Oakland would get. Game two looked as if it would belong to Oakland in the beginning, as the Golden Grizzlies ran out to a 13-6 advantage, again on the strength of some impressive serving. This time it was Becca Moller (Columbiaville, Mich.) who served three straight aces to power OU to the lead. After a timeout, Oral Roberts slowly climbed back into the match, finally tying the score at 26-26 on a service error from Moller. The teams traded the next four points to make it 28-28 before the Golden Eagles got the final two on a kill from Zuzic and a hitting error on Patti Hunter (Macomb, Mich.). Oral Roberts wasted no time in game three, jumping out to a 22-9 lead before going on to easily take the game and the match. Miller was the only Oakland player in double figures in kills, adding three blocks on the night as well to score 14.5 points overall. Linz and Heather Lippert (Walled Lake, Mich.) each had seven kills, with Linz adding her three aces and Lippert leading the team with four blocks. Moller wound up leading all players with five aces and Cortney Varterasian (Ypsilanti, Mich.) led OU with 12 digs. Zuzic had a strong all-around game for Oral Roberts, leading the team with 16 points on her 13 kills and three blocks, hitting .300 for the match. Becky Dreher led all players with 23 digs, and added seven kills on offense. Cristiane Alves also had seven kills for the Golden Eagles, while Kim Snow had six kills and a team-high five blocks. Oakland will be on the road for its next action, taking on UNKC in Kansas City on Friday, Oct. 31 with game time starting at 8 p.m. Eastern.
