Rochester, Mich. (Oct. 1, 2003) ???C Oakland???s women???s tennis wound up battling both the University of Detroit???s squad and the weather this afternoon in the final match of the fall season for the Golden Grizzlies. After playing the doubles matches outdoors in Rochester, rain forced the match indoors for singles play where the Titans wrapped up a 4-1 win. Sophomore Lisa Pellafone (Rochester, Mich.) scored the lone win of the day for Oakland at No. 2 singles. Detroit got off to a strong start in doubles action, taking all three matches. The closest the Golden Grizzlies could come was at the No. 2 position where the team of Jessica Erickson (Port Huron, Mich.) and Angela Trecola (Troy, Mich.) fell to the Titans by an 8-3 score. Oakland started off on the comeback trail by taking the first set in two if the first three singles positions. Senior Brittany Maxey (Farmington Hills, Mich.) took the first set at No. 1 singles and Trecola did the same at No. 3 singles to give OU the early edge in those matches. Pellafone dropped her first set to Kaitlyn McVehil, but bounced back to take the next two sets and the match, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, to put Oakland on the board. Trecola???s opponent, Andrea Buter, did the same, coming back to win the match at No. 3 singles in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. With a straight set win at No. 4 singles, the Titans needed just one more win to clinch the match. The battle came down to the No. 1 singles match between Maxey and Bianca Savarino. The two battled back and forth in the second set before Savarino pulled out the set in a tiebreak, 7-3. She then breezed through the final set 6-0 to clinch the win for Detroit. The other two singles matches were not finished after the Titans clinched the match.
