The Oakland University women's golf team opened the 2002-03 season with a 14th-place finish at the Cardinal Classic in Yorktown, Indiana. The tournament was hosted by Ball State University and was played on the par 72, 6,164-yard The Players Club golf course. Eastern Michigan claimed the team title shooting a two-day 610, while Western Michigan's Erica Bieniek won the individual title in a playoff after shooting 73-72--145. Bieniek defeated Kristin Hoff of Eastern Illinois in the playoff for the championship. The Golden Grizzlies shot 349-358--707 in the two-day tourney and finished in front of conference opponent IUPUI (717). Leading the way for OU was senior
Emily Minnich (Geneva, Indiana/South Adams HS) who shot an 81-76--157 and finished 26th overall. Junior
Mara Mazzoni (Livonia/Stevenson HS) followed in 46th place after shooting a two-day 168 (80-88). Junior
Sarah Stark (Battle Creek/Pennfield HS), junior Kathy Goodvich (Rochester/Bishop Foley HS) and freshman
Melanie Wasser rounded off OU's five in 71st, 79th and 80th places, respectively. Stark recorded a 184 (92-92), while Goodvich shot 198 (96-102) and Wasser a 203 (98-105). Oakland will next play on September 21-22 in the Lady Falcon Invitational hosted by Bowling Green State University.
