The Oakland University softball team hosted Western Illinois in the second day of a Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader, Saturday, April 27 in Rochester. Oakland blanked Western Illinois in the first game by the final of 4-0 but fell in the second game by the final of 12-4 after five innings. Oakland goes to 21-32-1, 12-8 in the Mid-Con, while WIU goes to 24-19 and 12-7 in conference play. Oakland got on the board early as the Golden Grizzlies scored two runs in the first ining to take an early 2-0 lead. Juniors

Lauren Seffens each tallied one RBI for OU in the two run inning. Oakland tacked on two more runs, one in the third and another in the fourth and went on to win by the final of 4-0. Leading OU in the first game was Granger as she was 2-3 from the plate with two RBI. Also collecting two hits for the Grizzlies were

Jaymie Voss and Seffens. Picking up the win for OU was Voss as she pitched seven innings striking out four and only allowing four Westerwind hits. For WIU Kristen Smith picked up the loss as she gave up nine hits and allowed four runs. In the second game OU again scored first as the Grizzlies took an early 1-0 lead. WIU answered in the second inning as the Westerwinds scored a whopping ten runs on ten hits to take a 10-1 lead. WIU's Katie Picken's hit a three-run shot down the left field line to highlight the ten run inning. Oakland would try to respond in the third inning as the Grizzlies scored three runs to make it a 10-4 game. In the fourth inning Western Illinois tacked on two more runs to lead 12-4. Trying avoid a mercy the Golden Grizzlies looked to erase the eight run deficit. Oakland was unable to score another run and was mercied in the fifth inning 12-4. Leading OU in the loss was Burns as she was 2-3 from the plate. For the Westerwinds Melissa Dempsky was a perfect 2-2 with two runs and one RBI. Julie Anderson collected the loss as she pitched one and one half innings giving up seven runs on seven hits. WIU's Lindsay Tasker collected the win for the Westerwinds as she pitched seven innings giving up four runs. Oakland will resume action as the Golden Grizzlies will travel to the windy city to battle DePaul, Monday, April 29. The first game of the doubleheader will start at 3 p.m. central time.
