Box Score Box Score The Oakland University softball team opened the Mid-Continent Conference season as the Golden Grizzlies split a doubleheader against UMKC this evening in Independence, Missouri. OU dropped the first game 0-3, but claimed victory in the nightcap 6-0. Oakland improves to 8-19, 1-1 in the Mid-Con, while UMKC goes to 11-17, 1-1 in conference action. In the first game the Kangaroos posted a 1-0 lead in the second inning off of three hits to make it a 1-0 game. UMKC added the final two runs of the game in the fifth inning to win by the final of 3-0. The Golden Grizzlies were held to no runs on three hits, while UMKC scored three runs on nine hits. Leading OU was Megan Piar as she was 2-3 from the plate. Freshman Nicole Marzano picked up her seventh loss (2-7) of the year as she allowed eight Kangaroo hits in five innings. In the second game OU got on the board early as the Grizzlies made it a 2-0 game in the third inning. Leading the Golden Grizzly attack was Nina Catanzaro as she collected a base hit and stole home in the two-run inning. Oakland increased its lead to three in the fourth inning as Linnea Utecht scored off a UMKC error to make it 3-0. OU added the icing on the cake as the Grizzlies poured in three runs in the fifth inning as OU went on to win by the final of 6-0. Leading OU in the nightcap was Utecht as she was a perfect 2-2 from the plate with one run scored. Picking up the win was sophomore Jaymie Voss (4-7) as she pitched a complete game only giving up four hits. Oakland will resume conference play Saturday, March 30 as the Golden Grizzlies and Kangaroos will play another doubleheader. The first game will start at 2 p.m. eastern stardard time.
