Golden Grizzlies Split Twinball Against Alabama

The Oakland University women's softball team split a doubleheader against Alabama Thursday afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. OU came up victorious in game one winning 3-2 and losing the second contest 0-8. The Golden Grizzlies move to 3-10 overall while Alabama slides to 12-9. In the first game Alabama struck first in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Oakland turned the table and took a 2-1 lead after three innings of play after junior Erica Burns (Clinton,Ontario/Central Huron) hit a two-run double to center field. Oakland incresed its lead in the sixth as Burns struck again with a double to left field to score Nina Catanzaro (Shelby Township/Dakota)for a 3-1 lead. Alabama inched closer with a run of its own in the sixth but it wouldn't be enough to claim the victory. OU clinched its third victory of the season 3-2. The winning pitcher for Oakland was Jaymie Voss (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) who pitched a full game for Oakland while giving up seven hits. Her record improves to 1-2 overall. Leading the Golden Grizzlies at the plate was Burns who finished with two doubles and three RBI. Catanzaro and Bozenna Johnson (Louisville,Ohio/Louisville) rounded out the Grizzlies offensive production with a hit apiece. Catanzaro also scored two of Oakland's three runs. In the second contest Alabama scored right out of the gate to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Crimson Tide put together a two-run third inning and a three-run fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead over the Golden Grizzlies. Alabama rounded out its scoring with one run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to seal its 12th victory of the season 8-0. Leading OU offensively, was Burns with the Golden Grizzlies only hit of the game. Alabama finished with nine hits on the game. The losing pitcher for the Oakland was Nicole Marzano (McHenry,IL/McHenry). Her record falls to 0-5 on the season. Oakland will be in action again on Thursday March 14 as they travel to Ohio State. Game time is slated to begin at 3 P.M.
