Jacksonville State Gets Past Oakland, 82-76

Box Score Rochester, Mich. ???C Jacksonville State overcame a three-point halftime deficit with a strong second half as the Gamecocks came back to take an 82-76 men???s basketball win over Oakland here tonight. Omar Barlett did most of the damage for Jacksonville State, scoring 29 points and pulling down 16 rebounds as the Gamecocks improved to 7-3 on the season. Oakland fell to 5-5 with the loss. With the game tied at 6-6 early in the first half, Oakland was the first team that made a move, gradually moving out to a nine-point advantage at 29-20 on a jumper by Shawn Hopes (Detroit, Mich.) with 6:37 left in the half. Led by Barlett, Jacksonville State came back, tying the game at 31-31 on a Barlett lay-up with three minutes to play. Oakland maintained its advantage however, and Cortney Scott???s (Lansing, Mich.) basket with three ticks on the clock gave the Golden Grizzlies a 39-36 halftime lead. Jacksonville State wasted no time in the second half, tying the game on a trey by James Denson. Two minutes into the half the Gamecocks took the lead for good when Carl Brown broke a 41-41 tie with a basket. JSU ran its advantage up to as many as 10 points five minutes into the half, taking a 52-42 lead on Barlett???s lay-up. Oakland cut the Gamecock lead to six points on a free throw by Mike Helms (Detroit, Mich.) but could get no closer than three the rest of the way. A Rawle Marshall (Detroit, Mich.) free throw cut the lead to 56-53 with 10 and a half minutes left, but OU could not get any closer. Scott???s free throw with 1:06 to play cut the lead back to three again at 79-76, but the Golden Grizzlies could not find a way to score in the final minute as Jacksonville State held on to take the win. Scott led Oakland with his first 20-point game of his career, totaling 23 points to go with nine rebounds. Helms added 15 points with Marshall netting 14 more. In addition to Barlett???s double-double, Poonie Richardson added 14 points and six assists for the Gamecocks, with Brown chipping in 12 points. Jacksonville State was hot from the field all night, hitting on 59 percent of its shots, with Barlett going 13-for-18. Oakland, which shot only 33 percent in the second half, shot just 40 percent for the game. The Gamecocks also out rebounded the Golden Grizzlies, 37-32. Oakland will be back on the road for its next game, taking on nationally ranked Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
