Mike Helms (Detroit, Mich.) and
Rawle Marshall (Detroit, Mich.) each scored over 20 points as the Golden Grizzlies rolled past Spring Arbor, 107-72, in the season opener for OU. Spring Arbor had its record evened at 4-4 with the loss. Oakland took a 1-0 lead to start the game on a Marshall free throw, but Spring Arbor came back on a lay-up by Mike Folkert and a three-pointer by Ryan Walter and the Cougars had a quick 5-1 lead a minute and a half into the contest. Both teams had troubles offensively in for most of the half until the Grizzlies finally found the scoring touch late in the first 20 minutes. A lay-up by Marshall with six minutes left before the half broke a 21-21 tie and gave OU a lead that it would not give up the rest of the evening. The Golden Grizzlies took advantage of nine Spring Arbor turnovers over the last six minutes and outscored the Cougars 24-7 over that span to take a 45-28 lead at the half. Oakland continued to dominate at the beginning of the second half as well, starting out the final 20 minutes by going on a 21-9 run over the first seven minutes to put the game away early. For the game Spring Arbor turned the ball over 30 times, with the Golden Grizzlies turning those miscues into 38 points. Oakland had a hot hand shooting the ball, hitting 55.2 percent from the floor for the game, including a 69 percent mark in the second half. Marshall wound up with 29 points and 10 rebounds in his Oakland debut, leading all players in both categories. Helms finished with 26 points to go with six steals and six assists.
Pierre Dukes (Grand Blanc, Mich.) added 14 points, while freshmen
Shawn Hopes (Detroit, Mich.) and
John Floyd (Toledo, Ohio) also had impressive Golden Grizzly debuts, scoring 13 points each. Kito Smith came off the bench to lead Spring Arbor with 16 points. Ryan Walter added 14 points and Jason DeSmyter had 11 for the Cougars. Oakland will swing back into action on Tuesday night, November 26 when the Golden Grizzlies will entertain IPFW at 7 p.m. in the Athletics Center ???O???Rena.
