Golden Grizzlies Drop Close One To IUPUI

The Oakland University women's basketball team dropped a tightly fought battle in the Athletics Center 'O'rena 72-67 this afternoon. OU fell victim to some deadly long-range shooting by the Jaguars as they hit 8-of-13 from behind the three-point line for IUPUI's first victory inside the 'O'rena. Oakland falls to 8-10, 2-3 Mid-Con, while IUPUI improves to 6-11, 2-3 Mid-Con. The first half witnessed eight lead changes with IUPUI taking the final one at 19-18 on a three-pointer by Jessica James with 9:46 remaining until halftime. The Golden Grizzlies shot a dismal 37.8 percent from the floor (14-37) in the first half as the Jaguars went 6-for-7 from behind the arc for a 40-33 lead at the break. OU was led by Sarah Judd (Eastpointe/Harper Woods Regina) with 14 points and six rebounds. The second half began in favor of Oakland as the Grizzlies outscored the Jaguars 11-5 in the first five minutes, trailing 45-44 with 14:53 left in the game. The next minute proved crucial for Oakland as they missed three straight opportunities to take the lead and the Jaguars capitalized as Natalie Hendricks made two free throws at the other end for a three-point swing, 58-55, with seven minutes left in the second half. The Golden Grizzlies didn't convert on two straight one-and-one opportunities as they went 1-for-6 from the charity stripe over a four-minute span and trailed 68-60 with 2:40 to go. Oakland wouldn't give up as they crawled back into the game with some good defense as Jasmin MacAlpine (Rochester/Marian) converted two free throws and Katie Wolfe (Cedar Springs/Cedar Springs) drained a three-pointer after an IUPUI turnover as the lead was cut to three, 68-65, with just two minutes remaining. After a Jaguar miss, Oakland came down on offense and misfired on three straight chances and still remained down three. IUPUI's Abbe Brauman misfired on a free throw and OU still had life with 57 seconds left in the game. OU's Wolfe had a second chance after a Judd miss as she let a three-pointer fly that went in-and-out with just 30 second to go. Freshman Amanda Batcha (Waterford/Kettering) grabbed another big offensive rebound and Oakland was given another chance to tie. The Golden Grizzlies turned to Judd as she attempted a three from the wing and the ball was halfway down before coming back out with IUPUI grabbing the board. The Jaguars' Amber Holle made four straight free throws to ice the Golden Grizzlies 72-67. Leading the way offensively for OU was Judd. She finished with her sixth double-double of the season with 23 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
