The Oakland University softball team dropped a doubleheader to Michigan State, 5-3 and 1-0 on Wednesday, April 25 in Rochester, Michigan. Oakland drops to 17-26, while MSU improves to 20-34. In the first game the Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but OU responded scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 2-2. Jennifer Granger to make it a 2-2 ballgame. The Spartans scored two runs in the third inning and one run in the sixth inning to hold a 5-2 lead over OU. In the bottom of the seventh the Golden Grizzlies were able to muster one run and fell short to MSU by the final of 5-3. Leading the Grizzlies was Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Week,
Ericka Burns as she was 2-4 from the plate with two runs scored. Also going 2-4 from the plate was freshman
Erica Judge and
Jaymie Voss. Voss also notched one RBI. Oakland scored three runs on eight hits, while MSU scored five runs on 10 hits. The second game of the day saw a battle of the pitchers as only one run was scored, which was by the Spartans in the sixth inning. OU's
Linnea Utecht pitched four and a half innings only giving up two hits, while MSU's Keri DeJong threw a complete game in the shutout only giving up two hits and striking out six Grizzlies. Leading OU in the second game offensively was freshman
Nicole Schulte and Sedgely as they both collected one hit. The Golden Grizzlies will be in action again Friday, April 27 as they host Mid-Con foe Youngstown State in a doubleheader. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
