Last Second Shot Downs Oakland In Exhibition Play

Box Score The Oakland University men's basketball team opened the 2001-02 pre-season with a 72-70 loss to the AAU Premier All-Stars Saturday, November 10 in Rochester, Michigan. The All-Stars Issac Bullock nailed a shot from behind halfcourt with one second left to lift the All-Stars past Oakland 72-70. Down 69-68 OU's Jason Rozycki stole the ball from Premier All-Stars with 34 seconds remaining in the game and drove the length of the court to give OU the 70-69 edge. Unfortunately for OU the All-Stars had the last shot. Oakland opened the game on top as senior Dan Champagne made a layup to give the Golden Grizzlies a 2-0 lead. Oakland and the Premier All-Stars exchanged leads three times but the Grizzlies were able to take a 40-38 lead into the lockerroom. Leading the Grizzlies at the half was sophomore Kelly Williams as he recorded 11 points, grabbed two rebounds and tallied three steals in nine minutes. Senior Mychal Covington led the Grizzlies with four assists and he scored eight points in the first 20. The All-Stars opened the second half as Justice Thigpen hit a layup to tie the game at 40. The All-Stars led the Golden Grizzlies most of the second half and led by as many as five points (three times). The All-Stars led 69-68 with one minute remaining in regulation but senior guard Rozycki made a layup to give OU a 70-69 lead with 34 seconds left. Oakland looked to increase its lead as Champagne went to the free-throw line with six seconds left. The Linden native missed both of the free throws, still leaving the All-Stars with one last shot to win the game. The All-Stars Issac Bullock fired a shot at the buzzer from beyond half-court and made it to hand the Grizzlies a 72-70 loss. Leading OU was sophomores Mike Helms and Kelly Williams as they both poured in 16 points. Helms also had five rebounds and two steals, while Williams had three rebounds and four steals. Senior Mychal Covington added 11 points and a team high four assists, while senior Brad Buddenborg led the team with seven rebounds. Oakland will begin its regular season as the Grizzlies travel to Ann Arbor to battle the Wolverines of Michigan, November 16 at 7 p.m. The Golden Grizzlies will look to follow up their performance last year as OU shocked Michigan with a 97-90 win at the Athletics Center 'O' rena.
