Oakland University defeated the University of Michigan 97-90 in the Athletics Center O'rena in Rochester Friday night to open the season and extend the Golden Grizzlies winning streak to six. Kelly Williams (Detroit/ Martin Luther King HS) gave Oakland the upper hand as he hit a trey, giving the Grizzlies a 6-4 lead at the 18:11 mark. Oakland never trailed again and took a 44-34 lead into the lockerroom at halftime. The Golden Grizzlies opened up the second half by jumping out to a 19-point lead, 58-39, at the 16:13 mark. The 19-point lead was the greatest of the game for OU. The Wolverines battled back to close the gap to seven with 2:19 remaining , but OU held on for the victory. This win marked Oakland's second victory in seven meetings with Big Ten schools and the second ever against Division I schools in Michigan. Oakland was led by junior

Williams also had seven rebounds and two blocks, while Champagne had four boards and one steal. Michigan was led by LaVell Blanchard (Ann Arbor/ Pioneer HS) and Bernard Robinson Jr. (Washington D.C./New Hampston Prep) both with 19 points apiece. Blanchard also recorded 13 rebounds and five assists. The Golden Grizzlies will travel to East Lansing on Sunday, November 19 to face the 2000 National Champions Michigan State. Game time is 2 p.m.
