Luehrung Named #HLWBB Freshman of the Week

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland University women's basketball freshman Makenzie Luehring was named the Horizon League Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week following her standout performance in the Golden Grizzlies' 80-70 road victory over Detroit Mercy on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Luehring delivered a career-best performance at Calihan Hall, pouring in 25 points to lead all scorers while helping Oakland secure its second straight win. The freshman guard was highly efficient from the floor, shooting 8-for-14 overall, including 3-for-7 from three-point range, and 6-for-7 at the free-throw line. She poured in 16 of her career-high points in the first half, as a strong start helped lift the Golden Grizzlies to victory.

In addition to her scoring output, Luehring contributed across the stat sheet with four rebounds, four assists and one steal in 30 minutes of action, providing a steady presence on both ends of the floor. Her offensive production helped spark Oakland's fourth-quarter surge, as the Golden Grizzlies outscored Detroit Mercy 26-20 in the final period to pull away for the road victory.

In what has been a tear of recent strong performances, Luehring has broken her career-high scoring mark in three of the last four contests, serving as a catalyst for the offense and finding her groove early in her career.

The honor marks the first Horizon League weekly award of Luehring's career, as well as the first for any Golden Grizzly this season, and highlights her undeniable and immediate impact in her freshman season. She currently ranks among Oakland's top contributors and has quickly established herself as a star in the Golden Grizzlies' rotation.
