Track and Field Wraps Up 2025 Outdoor Championships as Men and Women Both Earn 4th Place

YOUNGSTOWN, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies put together a record-breaking weekend on both the field and the track as the men's (91 points) and women's (94 points) teams combined for 195 points, both finishing in fourth place, wrapping up the 2025 outdoor season.

DAY 1

The Golden Grizzlies began the weekend strong, tallying 16 total points, 11 by the women and five by the men, as several records and highs were reached on Friday.

The men's and women's discus throws began Oakland's day, as Alex Mansfield tallied four points with a fifth place finish for the men, while Jamie Giese tallied a point with a top eight finish on the women's side.

In what was a relatively quiet first day for Oakland, with not many of their events on the slate, the 1500m prelims saw Oakland return to success as Yami Albrecht set a Horizon League Championship record with a time of 3:45.29 en route to an automatic qualifying spot to the finals. He was joined by Anthony Hancock (3:52.09) in second place in the opening heat to move through, and Michael Hancock (3:56.42) who's second palace finish in the third heat qualified him for the finals as well.

In the women's 1500m Erin Hegarty (4:37.76) and Sarah-Rose Sullivan (4:40.95) also pushed forward into the finals.

As the lights turned on and the night late, Oakland closed the opening day with another conference championship meet record as Grace Nolan's time of 34:17.44 broke a four-year long standing record in the 10k as Nolan lapped her opponents en route to a title.

DAY 2

Oakland continued to thrive on Saturday as right out the gate Giese earned second place in the women's shot put with a toss of 14.46m, also breaking her own program record. Mansfield followed suit on the men's side, earning the conference title for the men with a throw of 17.48m.

More points would add up for Oakland in the men;s high jump as Evan Bryan (7.02m) finished fourth and Xavier Davis (6.80m) finished seventh.

As the meet moved to the track for a big day of prelims, Kylei Anderson (14.16s) and Ja-Van Poole (14.49s) qualified for the men's and women's 110m hurdles finals to kick things off.

A'Naia Herd etched her name into Sunday's heat sheet as well in the women's 400m, qualifying with a time of 57.75s. 

Lauren Goodman Ke'Vina Finch (12.00s) advanced to the women's 100m final, meanwhile Julian Bailey (10.61s) did the same in the men's 100m.

Next, Ashley Quinn (2:13.75) and Karenna Duffey (2:14.16) both clocked in fast enough to advance in the women's 800m. Finch (24.59s) and Julian Bailey (21.48s) also qualified for the finals of the women's and men's 200m as Oakland continued to rack up finalists.

Oakland earned their final points of the day as Anne May earned a top eight finish in the 3000m steeplechase, as both Oakland men and women sat in fifth place heading into the final day.

DAY 3

Day number three began with great performances in the field as Xavier Davis finished fifth in the triple jump. In just the second event of the day, more records were broken as Elizabeth Rice broke her own program record in the hammer throw, tossing the hammer 54.16m en route to a second place finish. Giese added a point for Oakland as well with a sixth place finish.

The Golden Grizzlies moved into their first section of finals on the track in the 1500m. Hegarty (4:33.25) and Sullivan (4:37.77) finished fifth and sixth for the women, while Albrecht (3:48.47), Michael Hancock (3:49.14), and Anthony Hancock (3:50.48) finished second, third, and fourth respectively for the men.

The sprints ensued next, with Anderson (13.97s) earning fifth in the women's 100m hurdles and Poole placed fourth in the men's 100m hurdles (14.76s) as they both added points to Oakland's cause.

Finch and Goodman finished sixth and seventh in the women's 100m for an additional five points for the Golden Grizzlies, while Bailey finished sixth in the men's final.

Ashley Quinn capped off her dominant year by breaking another record, this time setting new Horizon League Championship and Oakland program marks in the women's 800m with a time of 2:09.09 en route to a conference title. Karenna Duffey (2:14.62) also finished in the top five.

Poole next continued to top the charts in the men's 400m hurdles, taking the championship victory with a meet record time of 50.24s.

Finch earned a silver in the women's 200m dash (24.21s) and Bailey fifth (21.63s) in the men's section as Oakland continued to stack their highest point totals of the meet.

With the last few events on the horizon, Erin Hegarty earned her spot on the podium in the women's 5k, placing second with a time of 17:13.14. Albrecht added another piece to his hardware collection, securing second place in the men's 5k with a time of 14:35.57 to close out the individual competitions for Oakland.

Oakland would close out the weekend with the 4x400 relays, with women placing sixth (3:52.33) and the men third (3:15.02).
