SAGINAW & ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies men's and women's indoor track and field team wrapped up its first meets of the 2024-25 season today at both Grand Valley and Saginaw Valley.
Both teams had strong showings, as 16 student-athletes placed in the top-5 between the two meets, including three first-place finishes. Four Golden Grizzlies set school records during the SVSU Holiday Open, with a pair coming from the field and the other on the track. Alex Mansfield set the all-time school record in shot put with a distance of 17.52m, while Romario Jackson sits atop the record book in weight throw with a distance of 19.37. On the track, Tyler Donovan raced to the finish line in 1:51.35 in the 800m, placing first both in the race and in the record book. Finally, Ke'Vina Finch raced in the 200m and finished with a school record of :24.66.
Finch had a successful day on the track, as she placed first in the 200m and the 60m where she crossed the line with a time of 7.58. Along with Finch, Abby Jackson and Ashley Quinn placed in the top-5 in the 800m race, as Jamie Giese led the team in the Women's Weight Throw, placing fourth with a distance of 16.88m.
For the men, Terrence Brooks Jr. nearly finished behind Donovan in the 800m with a final time of 1:51.93, as Wesley Hollowell finished the 5000m in third with a time of 14:35.17.
Back on the east side of the state, in Saginaw, the Oakland women's team had a strong showing in the 3000m race as half of the top-10 were Golden Grizzlies. Madalyn Agren placed second with a time of 10:51.01, as Miriam Murrell placed in the top-5 with a time of 11:04.52. On the field, in the Women's Pole Vault, freshman Allison Shelton led the way in fifth with a height of 3.32m.
