2024 Hall of Honor Inductee: Andy Wagstaff

ROCHESTER, Mich - Andy Wagstaff has been inducted into the Hollie L. Lepley Hall of Honor as part of the class of 2024. The former Oakland soccer phenom was no stranger to success in his time as a Pioneer or a Golden Grizzly, playing and coaching his way into the program history books. As a student-athlete he helped lead the program to the NCAA Division II Semifinals in 1991, the Final Four in 1992, and the Division II Championship game in his senior season in 1994.

A four-year letter winner, Wagstaff also had incredible individual success at the university, being named a NSCAA Athletic All-American in 1992 and earning a spot on the 1994 Umbro All-Midwest College Select Team.

In his post-collegiate career, Wagstaff moved up into the pro levels, competing in the professional indoor soccer league for the Detroit Rockers and the Detroit Neon.

After his playing career ended, Wagstaff stayed with the game he loved, moving into a storied coaching career across the globe. He returned home to England in the late 1990s to coach at the Academy level, leading Bolton Wanderers FC from 1998-99 and Liverpool FC Academy from 1999-2002. After a brief stint overseas, Wagstaff then returned to Oakland to be an assistant coach for the Women's Soccer Team in 2003. He also spent time as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan and with the Flint City Bucks, leading them to a 2019 USL League Two North American Championship.

The British soccer legend's most storied coaching stretch came at Saginaw Valley State where he helped them become one of the top Division II soccer programs in the country. In his four seasons with SVSU soccer (2015-18), they appeared in four straight NCAA Division II tournaments, including a run to the Sweet 16 in 2018. Wagstaff was named GLIAC Coach of the Year in three consecutive seasons (2015-17) while reaching the GLIAC Championship on three separate occasions (2015, 2017, 2018), bringing home the trophy in 2018.

Even with success at the collegiate level, his heart remained with Oakland. Wagstaff returned to Oakland as an assistant coach for the Men's Soccer program from 2012-14, and once more as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator in 2019.

Wagstaff now serves as the Liverpool FC International Academy Michigan Owner and President, spreading his passion for the sport through several leagues and programs throughout the state.

"I am incredibly honored to be inducted into the Oakland University Athletics Hall of Honor for the second time. The first, in 2023 with the 1994 Men's Soccer team, holds a special place in my heart. My deepest gratitude to my Mum, Dad, Brother in the UK and my wife Lindsey, and kids Charlotte and Drew for their unwavering support," said Wagstaff. "Special thanks to Gary Parsons for recruiting me in 1991 and guiding my transformative college years. I'm grateful for Eric Pogue and Paul Doroh's support, and to everyone who played a part in my journey. Thanks to the Oakland University Athletics Department and the Hall of Honor committee for recognizing my contribution to Oakland University men's soccer."

He will be honored at halftime during the Men's Basketball game on Saturday,  Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. against Cleveland State. This year's induction ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. after the game at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester, MI.
