Individuals Crowned Champions on Final Day of #HLTF Championships

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Oakland University Track & Field took home five individual titles on the final day of the 2023 #HLTF Indoor Championships in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Sunday afternoon with plenty of other point-scoring performances. 

Azsah Bradley took home a runner-up spot in the Women's 60m in 7.50m while Samari Finney led the way as one of three Golden Grizzlies in the Women's 200m in fourth with a time of 25.06. Finney also spearheaded Women's 400m efforts in 57.20.

The Men's 60m finals saw Julian Bailey place fourth with a LED board time of 6.95 seconds, doubling to lead the team in the Men's 200m in fifth at 22.40 seconds. 

Gabriel Singh and Justin Kudera went one-two in the Men's 400m as both went sub-50 seconds with 49.22 and 49.57, respectively. Eddie Harrell III would run away with first overall in the Men's 800m at 1:55.39 while his teammate, Yami Albrecht, placed first in the Men's Mile at 4:13.23. 

Ashley Quinn was the individual winner of the Women's 800m in 2:16.57, doubling for second overall in the Women's Mile at 5:03.47. Grace Nolan racked up a few accolades in the Women's 3000m and Women's 5000m with second and third-place finishes in 10:07.02 and 17:18.89, respectively.

Albrecht took third in the Men's 3000m at 8:36.67 while finishing eighth in his third event of the meet with 14:59.11 in the Men's 5000m.

GiAndre Lee led the squad in the Men's 60m Hurdles, stopping his watch in 8.30 seconds. In the final track event of the day, the Men's 4x400m team of Bailey, Kudera, Armon Howard, and Singh saw second-place fade away as the group finished first in the event with 3:19.01.

The Women's 4x400m Relay team of Makiya Worthy, Finney, Bradley, and Payton Sabouin finished fourth in the second heat with a mark of 3:57.70.

Naturally, Alex Hugh-Plott commanded his Men's High Jump reign with a height of 2.10m (6'10.75") while placing eighth overall in the Men's Long Jump at 6.89m (22'7.25"). 

It was Kalli Knoble in the Women's High Jump as the freshman scored points with a fifth-place height of 1.65m (5'5") while Finney saw her name pop up in the Women's Long Jump scoreboard in sixth with 5.57m (18'3.25"). Freshman Simara Miller took sixth in the Women's Triple Jump at 11.67m (38'3.5").

Shemar Jenkins took runner-up in the Men's Triple Jump with a mark of 14.19m (46'6.75") while the Golden Grizzlies' Men's Shot Put leader was Markell Green with a toss of 15.62m (51'3"). The team's Heptathlon leader, Markeal Williams, took home runner-up honors with 4210 points. 

Lauren Christian paced the way in the Women's Shot Put with a heave of 13.47m (44'2.5"). 

Youngstown State won both team titles with 221 points on the men's side, 182 on the women's side. Oakland's men's squad placed runner-up following its 4x400m Relay victory with 148 points while the women were third with 99 points, respectively. 

Finney was named the Freshman of the Year, Running by the league following the meet's conclusion.

Hugh-Plott will be heading to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships from March 10-11 as Oakland's only qualifier.
