Mark Guthrie Awarded the 2024 Community Service Award

Rochester, Mich. - Mark Guthrie has been named the 2023 Community Service Award recipient.

Guthrie is an Oakland Alumni with roots dug deeply into the university. He attended and attained degrees from the Oakland School of Engineering and Computer Science in 1986, as well as the School of Business in 1991. Guthrie has held many positions over his time at Oakland post graduation, including Chair of the Golden Grizzlies Champion Club Advisory Board and Immediate Past Chair on the OUAA Board of Directors.

For years Guthrie has pledged his time and effort into helping student athletes get the tools they need to be successful on the court, in the classroom, and in life. He also has been a part of the School of Business ACHIEVE Networking with Professionals as a volunteer since 2012, and he also participates as a speaker for Career Services events and the award-winning Leadership OU program.

In 2017, Guthrie was awarded the Spirit Award at the 23rd Annual Alumni Awards Banquet. This award recognizes those who provide exemplary volunteer service, advocate tirelessly, and show great pride in their affiliation to OU. Guthrie has shared his passion for philanthropy through many outlets, serving on the Executive Committee of the Leader Dogs for the Blind Board and also chairs the Technology Committee for the non-profit.

"Since I arrived at Oakland University, I have seen firsthand Mark's service and contributions to OU Athletics and how they have made a difference to Golden Grizzly student-athletes, coaches, and staff," said Athletic Director Steve Waterfield. "He is a proud OU graduate who has done so much for the entire University since he graduated. A leader within the OU Athletics community, the University community, and the local community, Mark is a deserving recipient of the Community Service Award, and I look forward to honoring him in February".
