SIX TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES EARN HORIZON LEAGUE ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS

Kenton Rivard, Tyler Sirut, Heather Czarnecki, Olivia Kane, Rachel Levy and Dana Tessmer have been named to the Horizon League's Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Academic All-League teams, announced by the league office on Thursday. To be eligible for the Horizon League All-Academic consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.0 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
 
Rivard, a senior from Marine City, Mich. maintains a 3.6 average in the pre-business administration program at Oakland. He placed first in the weight throw at the SVSU Open with a toss of 53 ft., 1 in. At the same meet, he placed runner-up in shot put with a mark of 49 ft., 11.75 in. At the Horizon League Championships, Rivard placed fifth in the weight throw (52 ft., 9.25 in.) and sixth in shot put (51 ft., 5.75 in.) Additionally, the thrower placed runner-up in weight throw at the Jack Skoog Open with a mark of 54 ft., 7.5 in.
 
Sirut, a senior from Macomb, Mich. has an impressive 3.64 GPA in the Oakland Nursing program. Sirut made the podium at the Horizon League Indoor Championships, placing runner-up in weight throw with a toss of 59 ft., 2.25 in. He also placed first in the same event at the Jack Skoog Open by a mark of 59 ft., 5.75 in. Sirut also placed third in weight throw at the Gladstein Invitational and fifth in shot put at the SVSU Jack Skoog Open.
 
Levy, a redshirt-junior from Midland, Mich. had a record setting indoor season for the Golden Grizzlies this year as well as maintaining her 3.80 GPA in Health Sciences in the classroom. Levy was named the Alfreeda Goff Female Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year prior to the League Championships as well as being named the Horizon League Women's Nike Runner of the Week on three different occasions. Levy has broken three different school records and holds the top time in the conference in the mile at the Ice Breaker Dual Meet (4:56.57), the 3000m at the Notre Dame Meyo Invite (9:34.45) and the 5000m at the Iowa State Classic (16:36.31). To top off her season, she was crowned the 5000m, 3000m and mile champion at the 2019 Horizon League Indoor Championships, becoming the first female to sweep all three events.
 
Czarnecki, a sophomore from Deerfield, Mich. holds a strong 4.0 GPA in Pre-Wellness and Health studies and was a member of the first place DMR team at the Horizon League Championships. She also placed fourth in the mile at the League Championships with a time of 5:02.32. In her 2018-19 campaign, Czarnecki has recorded eight different top-five finishes apart from the championships.
 
Tessmer, a senior from Dexter, Mich. holds a 3.63 average in Marketing. A consistent pole vaulter across the board, Tessmer tied the school record, placing second in the event at the Horizon League Championships with a vault of 12 ft., 6 in. She also placed runner-up at the SVSU Doug Hansen Open with a vault of 11 ft., 5.25 in. and placed third at the Jack Skoog Open.
 
Kane, a junior from Sparta, Mich. holds a 3.97 in health sciences took gold in pole vault at the Horizon League Championships, setting and tying a new school record with a vault of 12 ft., 6 in. Kane also placed runner-up in pole vault at the SVSU Doug Hansen with a mark of 11 ft., 5.25 in. Also at SVSU, she placed second at the Holiday Open (11 ft., 11.25 in.)
