ACME -- Former Oakland men's golfer Jake Kneen shot a final round of 75 (+3) to finish with a three-day score of 280 (-8) to claim the title Thursday at the 101st Michigan Open Championship at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.
Kneen, a native of White Lake, Mich. played for the Golden Grizzlies from 2014-18 and becomes just the sixth amateur to win the state Open championship and just the second in the last 43 years.
"I means a lot, and just really validates a lot of the work that I've put in," Kneen told michiganpgagolf.com. "This is one of the biggest tournaments of the year for me personally, and it also validates what I want to do. My dream is to be a pro and me winning a tournament like this shows that it is not outrageous that I want to do that."
Kneen was named the Horizon League Player of the Year as a senior this past season, after leading the league in scoring average at 72.76 while also winning the CSU Invite and recording three top-five finishes in nine tournaments.
"What an incredible performance by Jake this week," said Oakland Men's Golf Head Coach Nick Pumford. "I've been around a lot of good players in my career and Jake ranks up there as one of the best so to see him have this success isn't surprising. I couldn't be more proud of the poise he showed under pressure at the end. This will be a major springboard for Jake's confidence as he begins his professional career."
As an amateur Kneen won over $8,000 in prize money.
