Aug. 5, 2016

2016 U.S. Amateur Championship

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Former Oakland golfers Jeff Champine and Anthony Sorentino are set to compete at the 2016 United States Amateur Golf Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., August 15-21. This marks the fifth consecutive year Oakland is represented at America's oldest golf championship.

Champine (1994-97) qualified by shooting a two-day score of 143 to finish tied for runner-up at Katke-Cousins Golf Course on the campus of Oakland University. In 2014, he was a member of the Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) team that competed in the Fuller Cup in Lansing, Mich. While at Oakland, he was an All-GLIAC Second Team Selection in 1995 and still ranks 11th all-time in program history with a 75.84 career stroke average.

Sorentino (1998-01) qualified at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield, Mich., by shooting a 142 and tying for runner-up. He then went on to win a four-person playoff to qualify. Last year he won the GAM Mid-Amateur Championship, his second title in that tournament and the first since 2006. One month later, he went on to claim the Tournament of Champions title at Katke-Cousins Golf Course. He was also runner-up of the Golf Channel's first-ever Big Break in 2003 held at TreeTops Resort in Gaylord, Mich. While at Oakland, Sorrentino was a two-time Summit League Honor Roll selection in 1999 and 2000.

The 2016 U.S. Amateur format will consist of two rounds of stroke play, one round on each of the North and South courses. The top 64 scorers will advance to match play to establish the 2016 U.S. Amateur champion.
