HANOVER, N.H. - Elena Popkey scored 20 points and Olivia Nash finished with a double-double as Oakland fell to Dartmouth, 59-54, in women's basketball action on Friday at Leede Arena. The Golden Grizzlies concluded non-conference play with a 6-7 record.
Popkey's 20 points is a season-high as she hit a season-best four 3-pointers. It is also her 10th career 20-point performance. Nash collected 12 points and 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season and 21st of her career. Nola Anderson added 11 points for her third-straight double-digit point performance.
The Golden Grizzlies trailed by five going into the second half and were able to keep the game tight, even tying the game at 49-49 on a Popkey layup, but were never able to take the lead. Down six points with five minutes to play, Anderson would score five points in six seconds to trail 55-54. Oakland continued to play tough but Dartmouth's Fanni Szabo sealed the game for the Big Green hitting a layup and two free throws in the final 30 seconds for the final tally.
Oakland trailed 29-25 at the half despite going down by as many as 13 late in the period. The Golden Grizzlies closed the half on a 10-2 run led by eight points from Popkey as she hit back-to-back 3-pointers, including one at the buzzer. Oakland shot just 22.9 percent in the half but forced 10 turnovers.
Dartmouth was led by Szabo with 21 points, while Lakin Roland added 13. The Big Green shot 73.3 percent (11-15) from the free-throw line compared to just 35.3 percent (6-17) by the Golden Grizzlies.
The Golden Grizzlies will return home on Jan. 10 to begin Horizon League play as they host Milwaukee inside the Athletics Center O'rena at 11:30 a.m.
