ORLANDO, Fla. - Leah Somerfield scored a team-high 12 points off the bench as Oakland fell to UCF, 98-65, in women's basketball action Monday night at CFE Arena. The Golden Grizzlies fall to 0-2 on the season.
"You can't win by missing uncontested layups and jump shots," said coach Jeff Tungate. "You can't win giving up 22 offensive rebounds. You can't win sending a team to the foul line 34 times in the second half. You can't win guarding for 17 minutes to start a game and leading by six then finish the half giving up a 15-0 run. UCF did what they needed to do and we didn't."
Somerfield records her first-ever double-figure point effort in just her second career game. Olivia Nash, Nola Anderson and Hannah Orwat each added seven points. Oakland shot 31.8 percent (21-66) from the field. Elena Popkey grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Golden Grizzlies came out strong as they led by six points with just 3:25 left until halftime at 26-20. However, the Knights would score 15 unanswered points, led by Zykira Lewis who hit three 3-pointers, to take a 35-26 lead going into the second period.
UCF would score 63 points in the second half as three Knights scored in double-figures in the period led by Lewis with 16 points. UCF shot 34 free throws in the second half and finished the game with 42 free throw attempts.
Lewis scored a game-high 28 points and Brittni Montgomery finished with a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards. The Knights shot 41.8 percent (28-67) from the field including 47.6 percent (10-21) from behind the arc.
The Golden Grizzlies return to the court on Sunday as they play their home opener at 6 p.m. against Chicago State.
