MIAMI, Fla. - Olivia Nash recorded a double-double with a career-high 24 points as Oakland dropped its 2014-15 season opener to Miami, 66-53, Friday afternoon at BankUnited Center. The Golden Grizzlies drop to 1-4 in its last five season-opening games.
"Really proud of how our team competed," said coach Jeff Tungate. "We need to realize though that the margin of error in an ACC gym is small. Too many first-half turnovers and missed open shots throughout the game. Considering how poorly we defended in our two scrimmages, the effort and execution today shows how much this team is willing to work and improve defensively. Once we settle down on offense and learn to play uncomfortable, we will be just fine. I like our team."
Nash recorded her 16th career double-double with 14 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards, as it marks just the second time she has scored 20 or more points in a game. Elena Popkey was Oakland's next leading scorer with seven points, followed by Nola Anderson and Peyton Apsey with six each.
Trailing by 16 coming out of halftime, Oakland would outscore Miami, 31-28, in the second half. Nash scored half of her points in the second period, while Apsey added six. Oakland would cut Miami's lead to 10 points with an 8-2 run to open the half led by Nash with a 3-pointer and a old-fashioned three-point play on the next possession, but the Golden Grizzlies were unable to cut the lead further.
Miami came out hot from the tip starting the game on a 11-2 run and led by as many as 19 points in the opening period as the Hurricanes forced 13 turnovers. Adrienne Motley scored a game-high 21 points and Suriya McGuire recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards to lead Miami.
The Golden Grizzlies shot just 30.6 percent from the field, including 31.6 percent from long range, compared to 40.7 percent for the Hurricanes. Oakland and Miami tied with 44 rebounds each.
The Golden Grizzlies will continue its opening-season road trip through the state of Florida on Monday as they take on UCF beginning at 7 p.m. at CFE Arena.
