OMAHA, Neb. -- Elena Popkey scored 11 points and Sinclair Russell had a career-high 10 as Oakland (7-8, 1-2) lost 59-41 to Omaha (10-3, 2-1) on Thursday at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Golden Grizzlies are the first Summit League team to play a league contest on Omaha's home court.
"Omaha deserves credit for playing very well tonight," said Oakland head coach Beckie Francis. "Their trio of senior guards played well and were the difference in the game."
Popkey scored all 11 of her points in the first half to propel Oakland to a 25-24 lead at the break. She also had a team-high nine rebounds and tied for the team lead with four assists and three steals. She has been the top scorer for Oakland in each of the last four games.
Russell scored all of her points in the second half and helped the OU bench outscore the Omaha reserves 11-7. Olivia Nash returned to the lineup and finished with nine points and four rebounds.
The Mavericks shot 46.9 percent and held OU to 23.8 percent shooting from the field in the second half as the game switched in favor of the hosts. The Golden Grizzlies were 0-for-10 from three-point-range in the second half and finished with a season-low two 3-pointers. It was the first time that Oakland has lost when leading at the half this season.
Carolyn Blair-Mobley led Omaha with 19 points. Paige Frauendorfer had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Jamie Nash added 15 points and nine assists. The Mavericks outrebounded OU 44-28 and shot 41.4 percent from the field. OU was 31.4 percent from the field for the game.
Oakland resumes Summit League play on Thursday, hosting South Dakota State at the Athletics Center O'rena at 6:30 p.m.
