VERMILLION, S.D. - Brittany Carnago scored 13 points to lead the Oakland women's basketball team (11-15, 7-10) in a 49-38 loss at South Dakota (20-7, 11-6) on Saturday at the DakotaDome. Bethany Watterworth scored 10 points and moved into 10th place on the OU all-time scoring list.

"Our team kept fighting," said Oakland head coach Beckie Francis. "It was a defensive battle and South Dakota was able to find a slight edge at the free throw line."

Oakland trailed 25-15 at the half, but went on an 8-0 run to start the second half. Carnago hit a layup to cut the OU deficit to 27-25 but Oakland never led in the game. The Golden Grizzlies went over 12 minutes without a field goal in the second half. The team shot a season-low 23.6 percent from the field.

Watterworth scored eight points in the second half and reached 1,470 for her career to pass assistant coach Anne Hafeli for 10th most points in school history. She has reached double-digits in 25 of OU's 26 games this season. She finished the game one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds

Both teams played well on defense with Oakland holding USD to just 27.5 percent shooting. Amber Hegge was the only Coyote player to reach double-digits with a game-high 14 points.

Victoria Lipscomb had 12 rebounds to help the Grizzlies win the battle of the boards 44-39. Lipscomb also had a game-high five assists, while Malika Glover scored nine points.

"We have put this game behind us and we're focusing on our preparation for Monday night," concluded Francis.

Oakland will wrap up the regular season on Monday against UMKC at the Swinney Recreation Center at 8 p.m. ET.
