ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Elena Popkeyscored a career-high 22 points to lead Oakland (6-7, 0-1) in an 81-73 loss to hot-shooting Western Illinois (7-5, 1-0) on Friday at the Athletics Center O'rena. The Golden Grizzlies had four players score in double-digits.

"When the other team shoots 55 percent from 3, it is really hard to win," said head coach Beckie Francis. "They hit key shots at key moments. I felt like we had our top defenders on their best shooters and they still hit shots. Western Illinois had a good inside out game and played really well."

The Golden Grizzlies trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, but cut the lead to 37-36 on a bucket by Zakiya Minifee, capping a 17-4 run. Saule Kontautaite responded for WIU hitting a 3-pointer to make it 40-36 at the half.

Popkey scored 11-points in each half and hit three 3-pointers in the second half, the third of which cut the WIU lead to five points, with 5:56 to play. It was the closest OU would get in the second half, as Rebecca Henricson responded with a 3-pointer on the other for the Fighting Leathernecks.

The Golden Grizzlies shot 37.7 percent from the floor with Elizabeth Hamlet adding 13 and Annemarie Hamlet scoring 12, while Minifee finished with 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. Peyton Apseyscored five points and grabbed four of Oakland's 17 offensive rebounds.

Kontautaite had 24 points, including four 3s to lead Western Illinois. The Leathernecks hit 53.4 percent from the field and was 11-for-20 (55 percent) from three-point-range. Ashley Luke added 16 points, while Michelle Maher had 11 and Henricson scored 10.

All-nine players scored for the Black and Gold and the bench had a 20-12 edge over the WIU reserves. Oakland also scored 25 points off of the 18 turnovers by WIU.

The Golden Grizzlies are back in action on Sunday with a game against IUPUI inside the O'rena at 2 p.m.
