ROCHESTER, Mich. - Annemarie Hamlethit four 3s and scored 19 points as Oakland (1-0) shot the ball well and beat George Mason (0-1) by a score of 62-58 at the Athletics Center O'rena on Friday. The Golden Grizzlies shot 43.5 percent from the floor, while holding GMU too just 36.5 percent.
"It feels really good to win in our home opener," said OU head coach Beckie Francis. "It seems like a really long time since we've [won our first home game against a division I opponent]. I give a lot of credit to the players because they're very coachable. We've had some really intense practices and I want to give a shoutout to our scout team because they really helped prepare us."
Hamlet went 5-for-7 from the field and made three 3-point baskets, to lead all players with 13 points in the first half. As a team, the Golden Grizzlies shot 51.9 percent in the first half and raced out to a 37-20 lead at the half. Oakland's defensive effort kept GMU to a meager 27.6 percent shooting in the opening half and held the Patriots without a 3-point basket.
After George Mason scored the first basket of the game, Oakland's Olivia Nashresponded with a jumper at the other end to spark an 11-0 run that saw the Golden Grizzlies scratch out a nine-point lead. Nash another of Oakland's talented freshman class, finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
George Mason raised the defensive intensity to start the second half and went on a 5-0 run, while holding OU scoreless for the first 3:25 of the half. However, Hamlet stopped the run with her fourth 3-pointer of the evening. After averaging less than three 3-pointers per-game last season, OU drilled seven against GMU.
The Patriots cut the lead to single-digits at the 12:40 mark of the second half, but OU instantly restored the double-digit margin on a 3-pointer by Victoria Lipscomb. A redshirt junior, Lipscomb's experience showed as she restored order with the shot and managed to fill out the box score with 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two blocks.
Oakland held a double-digit lead going into the final two minutes and was up nine 40 seconds to go, when a late run by GMU made the score suddenly close. A long-range three by Janaa Pickard with 8.4 seconds left made it a one-possession game. Elena Popkeysealed the win, by knocking down a free throw and then grabbing her own rebound on the missed second shot to seal the victory.
Pickard led George Mason with 12 point, while Amber Easter posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Joyous Tharrington added 10 points as both OU and GMU had three players finish in double-figures.
Oakland's bench outscored the Patriots' bench 28-11 behind the 19-point performance from Hamlet. Elizabeth Hamletfinished with nine points and set the early tone with key layup.
The Golden Grizzlies return to the court on Monday when they take on American at the O'rena at 6:30 p.m.
