ROCHESTER, Mich. - Elena Popkey led the team with a career-high 16 points and eight rebounds and Olivia Nashrecorded her third-straight double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds as the Oakland women's basketball team (2-1) lost on a buzzer-beater to Buffalo (1-2) 61-59 Friday night in the Athletics Center O'rena.
"I thought we had a nice comeback and had it at the end," said head coach Beckie Francis. "We just had one or two plays that did not go our way as Buffalo hit some big shots and got on a roll early in the game."
With UB up 59-57 late in the second half, Popkey nailed a reverse layup to tie the game at 59-59 with only 14 seconds in regulation. On the next possession, Buffalo's Rachael Gregory would find open space on the floor and hit a layup with only two seconds left and OU was unable to get a shot off before time expired.
The Golden Grizzlies trailed 32-26 at the half after shooting only 25 percent from the field, but came back to shoot 46.2 percent in the second half including 3-for-7 from behind the arc. Oakland trailed by as many as nine in the second half but would use a 7-0 run, led by a Nash 3-pointer, to tie the game at 48-48. OU grabbed its first lead of the second half after Victoria Lipscombhit two free throws to make the score 52-51 with just 4:20 remaining.
Four Golden Grizzlies scored double-figures as Annemarie Hamlet recorded her third consecutive double-digit performance with 12 and Elizabeth Hamlet finished with 12 points, 10 in the second half and added three blocks. Oakland also recorded 11 steals in the game led by Lipscomb and Annemarie Hamletwith three each.
Buffalo's Kristen Sharkey led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, shooting 7-for-15 from the field including a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line. UB's Christa Baccas earned career highs in rebounds with 15, blocked shots with six.
The Golden Grizzlies will hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Western New York to take on Canisius on Nov. 20 starting at 5:30 p.m. and Niagara on Nov. 25 beginning at 2 p.m.
