ELMHURST, Ill. - Oakland University pulled off their sixth sweep as freshman Shelby Porter and sophomore Matt Sytsma were named the Summit League Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week, announced the league office Tuesday afternoon.
Porter wins the award for the first time in her career while Sytsma earns it for the second time.
"I'm very pleased that Shelby and Matt have won," said head coach Pete Hovland. "Matt had a very consistent weekend with four top three finishes. Shelby went out and had some very competitive swims."
At the Michigan USA Open, Porter qualified for two championship finals. She was seventh in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events (1:08.69, 2:25.74). Porter qualified for two 'B' finals, placing fifth in the 400 individual medley (4:43.77) and sixth in the 200 IM (2:13.45).
For the second straight year, Sytsma earned his award for performances at the Michigan USA Open. He was runner-up in the 100 free (46.55) and placed third in the 100 butterfly (51.55), 200 free (1:43.45) and 50 free (21.22). All four of Sytsma's times rank among the top 10 in the league this season.
