ROCHESTER, Mich.- Behind a double-double effort of 24 points and 10 rebounds from Bethany Watterworth, the Oakland women's basketball team (2-2) took Providence (2-3) to overtime before eventually falling, 51-50, on Tuesday night at the Athletics Center O'rena. The Golden Grizzlies outscored the Friars 24-18 in the paint.

"I was proud of the team tonight," said Oakland head coach Beckie Francis. "Our players gave everything they had. Things just didn't bounce right for us, It was a case where their bounces went in and ours went out."

Oakland took the lead 50-49 with 1:24 left in overtime on a layup by Malika Glover. However, Alicia Cropper responded for Providence, scoring with 1:02 left to put PC up for good. Cropper led all players with four points in the overtime session.

The Golden Grizzlies had a pair of looks at a game-winning shot, but could not find the bottom of the basket. OU was able to force a turnover with less-than 10 seconds to play, but a rushed 3-point attempt by Liz Hamlet hit the rim and bounced away.

The game featured 10 lead changes and eight ties, as Providence led 45-43 with less than 30 seconds to go in regulation. Watterworth drove the lane and was fouled to get to the line, where she knocked down two pressure-packed free throws to force overtime. The Golden Grizzlies finished the night 18-of-23 at the free-throw line.

Providence benefited from a double-double effort by Teya Wright who scored 20 points and pulled in 13 rebounds. Cropper added 13 points and five steals, while Rachel Barnes had eight points including two valuable 3-pointers. The Friars shot 37.7 percent from the field and held OU to just 31.3 percent.

After trailing 24-19 at the half, the Golden Grizzlies started the second half with a 12-4 run, which was sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers by Watterworth and Zakiya Minifee to put OU ahead 25-24. Neither team led by more than four points in the second half.

Victoria Lipscomb had six points and seven rebounds to help Oakland outrebound a taller PC team 39-37. Minifee and Brittany Carnago each added five points for the Golden Grizzlies. Carnago also had two blocks, giving her 200 in her career at OU.

It was the second consecutive season in which the game between Oakland and Providence was decided by a single point. Last season, the game ended 50-49 in PC's Alumni Hall.

Oakland is back in action on Sunday with a game at in-state rival Michigan State at 2 p.m. at the Breslin Center.
