ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland University men's and women's cross country teams open the 2010 season hosting the Golden Grizzly Open, Saturday, Sept. 4. Among the team competing in the meet, which will be held on the OU campus, are Detroit, IPFW and Marygrove. The meet is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.
"It's a huge advantage for us to open at home," said head coach Paul Rice. "We just had a workout on the course, so we are very familiar with it. It's nice to race at home where our family, friends and alumni can come out and watch us."
On the men's side, Oakland has five All-Summit League runners returning, led by Zack Jones, a three-time selection, who missed making all-region honors last year by one place. Pat Cassady and Phillip Palomino earned second team all-league honors last season while Brandon Griffin and Kenny Wall made second team in 2008.
For the women, the Golden Grizzlies have a pair of all-league performers back in Erica D'Angelo and Sara Lieblein. D'Angelo earned second team honors in 2008 before missing most of last year with an injury. Lieblein has earned second team honors the last two seasons. Back on the trail for Oakland is Lia Jones who became the third female to earn all-region honors in school history.
