GREENSBORO, N.C. - After finishing fourth in his heat with a time of 3:51.72 in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA quarterfinal round, senior Jason Bigelow qualified for the NCAA Championship Saturday afternoon on the campus of North Carolina A&T University.
"Jason has had to battle through a lot of adversity throughout his career and this year was no exception," said head coach Paul Rice. "He has come a long way since his journey began with us and I am so happy for him that his career will end with a trip to the NCAA Championship."
The Clio, Mich. native finished 14th overall and will now compete against the top runners from both the east and west regions in Eugene, Ore. The top-five runners from the two heats, plus the next two fastest times, earned a spot in the semifinals.
"What he has done for our program is amazing and I am so proud of him," said Rice. "A ton of credit goes to my assistant coach, JP Behnke, who has done a masterful job bringing Jason to this moment and preparing him so well. Kudos to JP, and I know he will have Bigs primed and ready for his best race at nationals!"
Bigelow will begin his journey in the national spotlight on Thursday, June 10 when he will compete in the 1500 run semifinal at Historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. The race is scheduled for a 4:45 p.m. start.
