Oakland Stops the Charge of the Raiders

DAYTON, Ohio - Junior Marcella Barretta qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships on the 1- and 3-meter springboards, winning both boards, one of five double winners as the Oakland University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Wright State Saturday afternoon.

The men (2-2) won 167-115 while the women (3-1) were victorious by a score of 164-130.

For the men, the Golden Grizzlies had three swimmers win two events. The double winners were sophomore Alex Aceino in the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events (51.84, 1:58.87, respectively), sophomore Tobias Hansen in the 200 backstroke (1:57.61) and 200 individual medley (1:59.97) and freshman Amr el Sayed in the 500 and 1650 free events (4:36.32, 16:03.86, respectively).

Oakland also received wins from freshman Matyas Keresztes in the 50 free (22.18), sophomore Jordan Moses in the 100 back (53.96), junior Scott Yarbrough in the 100 breaststroke (59.75), 200 free relay (1:26.59) of Keresztes, Aceino, freshman Zach Johnson and senior Marcin Unold and the 400 medley relay (3:32.48) of Hansen, Yarbrough, sophomore Josh Wolf and freshman Grant Harding.

For the women, freshman Vanessza Balogh made it four straight meets with at least two wins by capturing the 500 and 1650 free events (5:00.89, 17:00.34, respectively). Her time in the 1650 was the third fastest in OU history. Barretta set career-best of 265.72 (1M) and 291.52 (3M) in winning both springboards.

The Golden Grizzlies picked up individual wins from junior Johanna Gustafsson in the 100 breast (1:07.36), junior Nicole Salmeto in the 200 butterfly (2:12.98), junior Alyssa Vela in the 50 free (24.93) and senior Emily Wike in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.98).

Oakland is off until Dec. 2-4 when they hit the road for two meets. The divers will be at the Eastern Michigan Invitational in Ypsilanti while the swimmers will be competing at the Miami University Invitational in Oxford, Ohio. Both meets are scheduled to run all day on each day of competition.
