Oakland vs. Centenary
Postgame Quotes
Oakland University Head Coach Beckie Francis
Opening Statement
"When we play, I tell the players that there are little wars within the game. I felt like during the opening four minutes Centenary won the war. Then I challenged the team and I felt like we won a bunch of little wars after that. It was really fun. I told them I was proud of their mental toughness. Centenary is a much-improved team. They're feisty, they don't give up, and they're well-coached. I think that this was a good win for us."
On the play of the bench
"I'm proud to have this kind of confidence in my bench. It's because they work so hard every day in practice. They proved that they understand their role and they're willing to step in at any time. When you have a bench that's used to playing all the time, all you have to do is elevate their minutes a little bit. Centenary just beat Oral Roberts, a team that was picked to finish third in the league. They stepped up tonight against a good team."
On the team's zone offense
"We work really hard on that at practice. Centenary is a man-to-man team. They started out in man when we went down there, and then they went 2-3, and that's the first 2-3 we faced in a while, so it felt like the beginning of November again. We really worked hard in preparing for their 2-3 zone and we did a lot of those passing drills. It was a lot like good music, just flowing."
On the team's success on the offensive glass
"They wanted it. April Kidd had six offensive rebounds, and that's a clear indication. I thought Stacey Farrell's offensive rebound and put back came at a key moment, it got us back to a 10-point lead. I'm going to credit the preparation, because one way to beat the zone is by offensive rebounding and we worked hard on that."
Sophomore Center Brittany Carnago
On stepping up today
"They played us in the zone the whole game, so we were trying to push it in to the post and get it inside. They didn't have a bigger post defender, so it wasn't easy, but that's what we were trying to do with the high-low and getting it inside."
On her expectations for today's game after getting a triple-double against Centenary in Shreveport last month
"I thought about it but my focus was just going out there and getting the win."
On the team's depth and success defensively
"Like coach said, we just try to bear down with mental toughness and get the job done. We try to get a stop every time down the floor. When our defense is good our offense works."
On the play of the bench
"Kirstie Malone had an awesome game. She had a really good opportunity to come out and play tonight. She had four rebounds tonight and shot 50 percent from the floor. I was really excited for her."
