Nov. 21, 2009

Box Score

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Junior Stacey Farrell scored a career-high 14 points, junior Anna Patritto added 13 points, and senior Melissa Jeltema turned in a 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, but it was not enough for the Oakland University women's basketball team (1-3), as Marquette's Jessica Pachko scored 23 points, and Angel Robinson turned in a 10-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist triple-double to lead the Golden Eagles (3-1) to a 79-62 victory over the Golden Grizzlies on Saturday at the Al McGuire Center.

"We were good at times, and we made some bad decisions at other times," said Oakland head coach Beckie Francis. "We made some nice runs, but we would shoot ourselves in the foot to stop it. It's indicative of having a young team."

The two teams traded baskets and leads over the first five minutes of the game, with the Golden Grizzlies holding a 9-8 lead at the 15:48 mark after a jumper by Patritto. However, after a layup by freshman Karli Harris tied the game at 12-12, Marquette went on a 11-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Tatiyiana McMorris at the 10:28 mark to give Marquette a 11-point (23-12) lead.

Marquette pushed its lead out to 15 (38-23) at the 2:23 mark, but the Golden Grizzlies finished the first half on a 6-0 run, cutting the deficit to nine (38-29) at halftime.

Patritto hit a layup just 30 seconds into the second half, pulling OU to within seven (38-31) in the opening minute, but Marquette went on another run, outscoring Oakland 14-4 over the next seven minutes to extend the Golden Eagles' lead to 17 with 13:15 mark.

However, the Golden Grizzlies clawed back, pulling to within five (58-53) after a 3-pointer by Farrell with 7:34 remaining in the contest.

Marquette responded with authority, going on a 11-0 run to push their lead to 16 (69-53) with 4:29 remaining in the contest, and the Golden Eagles cruised to the win.

OU held a 44.4 percent to 40.0 percent advantage for the contest, holding the Golden Eagles to 34.3 percent shooting in the first half. However, Marquette dominated the rebounding glass, holding a 46-27 advantage, and a 20-5 advantage on the offensive glass, while forcing 21 OU turnovers. Marquette outscored OU 21-4 on second-chance points.

The Golden Grizzlies will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24, hosting Bowling Green at the Athletics Center O'Rena. A 6:30 p.m. tip is scheduled.
