ROCHESTER, Mich. - Junior Melissa Jeltema and seniors Jessica Pike and April Kidd all tallied 16 points, while junior Hanna Reising and sophomore Brittany Carnago both scored ten points apiece as the Oakland University women's basketball team rolled to an 87-64 win exhibition win over Western Ontario on Sunday afternoon.
"I was very pleased with the depth that we showed tonight," said head coach Beckie Francis. "We played everybody early in the first half and I'm really excited that we can go with different lineups. I was very happy with the way we played today."
The Golden Grizzlies traded buckets with the Mustangs over the first two minutes, but the Golden Grizzlies were able to open their lead to as many as nine (18-9) with 11:58 remaining in the opening half. UWO narrowed the margin to as few as four with 4:10 left in the half, but the Golden Grizzlies managed to take an eight-point (45-37) lead into the half.
OU opened the second half on a 15-2 run and never looked back, going ahead by as many as 30 (82-52) in the closing minutes of the contest. Oakland dominated the paint, outscoring the Mustangs 42-24, while scoring 28 points off turnovers and 24 second chance buckets.
OU held a 57-36 rebounding advantage while shooting 44.9 percent from the floor to UWO's 34.3 percent. OU forced 23 Mustang turnovers while coming up with 12 steals, including a game-high four from Kidd.
Jeltema led OU with 13 rebounds.
The Golden Grizzlies will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 14 as they host Columbia at the Athletics Center O'Rena. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
