WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sophomore Brittany Carnago and senior April Kidd both scored eight points and sophomore Courtney Walters added six, but the Oakland University women's basketball team (2-2) was unable to overcome a slow shooting effort in a 68-40 loss to No. 21 Purdue on Sunday at Mackey Arena.
"Purdue is a very good team," said head coach Beckie Francis. "They have been in the last few NCAA tournaments, and usually when we have made the tournament we play a team like Purdue. I told the team that this is the type of opponent we would have in the NCAA tournament so we have to get over the hump against a team like this."
Purdue opened the contest on a 12-2 run over the first seven minutes and never looked back. OU was able to pull to within seven (14-7) after senior Riikka Terava fed Kidd for a jumper, but Purdue came back with a 6-0 stretch and pushed their lead to 20-7. OU narrowed the gap to ten (26-16) at the half.
The Boilermakers continued to extend their lead throughout the second half, pushing ahead by as many as 30 (60-30) in the closing minutes of the contest.
Purdue held a 47.5 percent to 22.8 percent advantage shooting, but the Golden Grizzlies did shoot 42.9 percent from long range, buoyed by a pair of threes from Walters. Terava led OU with seven rebounds, while Carnago had three blocks and three steals.
The Golden Grizzlies will return home for a pair of games this week, hosting Siena on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m., and St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 3 p.m.
