ROCHESTER, Mich. ???C Junior Jessica Pike tallied a career-high 26 points on 12-of-15 shooting, sophomore Melissa Jeltema added 13 points (6-for-8), and junior April Kidd scored 12 points (5-for-10), to lead the Oakland University women???s basketball team (2-0) to an 107-40 victory over Marygrove (2-4) on Monday night in the Athletics Center O???Rena.
???I???m really proud of the way our team was unselfish with the basketball,??? said head coach Beckie Francis. ???We had 35 assists and that is our motion offense. Now we have to get ready for a big-time opponent in Auburn next week.???
The 67-point victory was the second largest margin during the Division I era. The Golden Grizzlies beat Marygrove by the same exact score a season ago, and defeated U-M Dearborn, 108-35, on Nov. 22, 2000, for a 73-point victory.
Oakland held the Bulldogs to under 20 points for the first half, and led 60-18. The Grizzlies shot 57 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes (25-44) and scored 70 points in the paint for the game.
Pike led the team with five assists, while senior Charlese Greer led OU off the bench, for the second straight game, with eight points, three rebounds and three assists. The Grizzlies finished the game with 35 assists to just 13 turnovers. OU forced Marygrove into 18 turnovers and out-rebounded the Bulldogs 58-21.
Oakland will take a week off before returning to the hardwood to face Auburn University on Wednesday, Nov. 21, in the O???Rena.
