Oakland Falls to Wisconsin-Green Bay

Box Score Green Bay, Wis. (Nov. 15, 2006) ???C Oakland???s women???s basketball fell to host Wisconsin-Green Bay 90-68 in non-conference action at Phoenix Sports Center tonight. Freshman Hanna Reising (Peoria, Ill.) led all players with 25 points, while senior Nicole Piggott (Pewamo, Mich.) surpassed the 1,000 career point plateau with nine points on the evening. Oakland???s overall record dropped to 1-1 while UWGB raised its record to 1-1. The Phoenix jumped out to an early lead, scoring 10 of the first 13 points to go up 10-3. Sophomore Jessica Pike (Clawson, Mich.) accounted for four early points for the Golden Grizzlies, converting a pair of layups. The OU defense kept UWGB from scoring in the paint early, but was unable to stop the Phoenix from draining threes, as 12 of its first 18 points were from beyond the 3-point line. Alex Webster capped the parade of 3-pointers with 13:03 left on the clock to extend the UWGB advantage to 18-7. Oakland rallied over the next two minutes to pull within two, with Reising initiating the attack with a 3-point field goal with 12:41 remaining. Shortly thereafter Piggott pulled down an offensive rebound to set up a layup by senior Bonnie Baker (Allen Park, Mich.) to bring the score to 18-12. Reising hit another three at 11:37 and after a free throw by UWGB???s Kayla Groh, she put in a layup to cut the Phoenix lead to two 19-17. But UW-Green Bay would pull ahead once again with a pair of 3-pointers from Natalie Berglin and Alex Webster, and a field goal by Nicole Soulis. Reising accounted for seven straight OU points later in the half on a pair of jumpers and a three scored with less than five minutes remaining in the first. Junior Liz Sowers (Hesston, Kan.) netted a pair of field goals and sophomore April Kidd (Grand Rapids, Mich.) sank a jumper with approximately 1:00 left, but UWGB still held a 47-32 lead at halftime. Oakland shot 41.2 percent from the field in the first half while UW-Green Bay maintained a 46.2 percent conversion rate. The difference for the Golden Grizzlies was 3-pointers, as UWGB attempted twice as many and converted at a higher rate. OU made three of the nine 3-pointers they attempted (33 percent), while the Phoenix hit eight of 20 attempts (40 percent). The second half started out fairly balanced with neither team hitting more than two shots in a row without an answer from the other squad. Oakland???s defense put pressure on UWGB about five minutes into the half, not allowing the Phoenix to score a field goal for nearly five minutes from 15:40 to 9:49, although it did register eight points from the line in that span. Meanwhile the Golden Grizzly offense chipped away at the Green Bay lead, with Piggott, Reising, Kidd and Pike sinking field goals and a pair of threes contributed by Piggott and Reising to bring OU within eight at 60-52 with approximately 10 minutes left in the match. The Phoenix was not about to go quietly, however, bringing the OU momentum to a screeching halt with a 20-0 run fueled by seven points from Soulis and four from Erin Templin to go up 81-52 with 3:42 left. Kidd interrupted the Phoenix with a jumper at 3:42. One and a half minutes later Kidd dished the ball to Piggott on the right side, who sunk a jumper for her 1,000th career point. Piggott started the game with 991 points and recorded nine points in the game to hit the 1,000 point plateau, scoring all nine in the second half. Reising converted a pair of free throws with 2:00 left and freshman Melissa Jeltema (Grand Rapids, Mich.) made a field goal to make it 87-60. After a pair of free throws by Kidd, senior Joya Puryear (Detroit, Mich.) unloaded a three as time expired for the 90-68 final. Reising was the only Golden Grizzly in double digits with 25 points. Piggott grabbed nine rebounds while dishing three assists. Pike led Oakland with five assists while Jeltema was tops with three steals. Oakland travels to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on Florida State Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
