Golden Grizzlies Take a 72-50 Win at Centenary

Box Score Shreveport, La. (Feb. 21, 2005) ???C Oakland University rebounded from a disappointing loss Saturday to down Centenary 72-50 in Shreveport. The Golden Grizzlies got a combined 38 points from their two leading scorers in the win, while Amanda Batcha (Waterford, Mich.) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and tied a career-high with eight assists. Oakland improves to 18-7 overall and got its 10th Mid-Con win of the season (10-4). The Ladies fall to 1-23 and 0-14. Taking a 43-17 lead into the break, it was Oakland???s guard play that got the Golden Grizzlies off to a great start in the first half as Jayme Wilson (Shawnee, Kan.) led the field with 15 points and Anne Hafeli (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) chipped in with 10 to open the contest. Even with four subs checking in off the bench, the Grizzlies didn???t skip a beat and distributed the ball well, posting 12 assists on 15 field goals. Leading by as many as 27 points in the opening period, OU shot just under 52 percent from the floor, including going 5-of-9 from long range. Centenary found itself in foul trouble in the first half with Jelena Aleksic collecting her third whistle at the 4:32 mark. Oakland took advantage on the other end, connecting on 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. The Golden Grizzlies also outrebounded the Ladies 29-13 before halftime. OU led by as many as 34 during the second half when Wilson sank a three-pointer to make the score 67-33 with 7:46 left in the game. Centenary, however, closed the game on a 17-5 run powered by the shooting of Aleksic and Laura Way. Holli Wilkins poured in 15 of her team-high 16 points in the final half, draining three triples in the process. The Ladies outscored (33-29) and outrebounded (22-20) the Golden Grizzlies in the second stanza, though OU shot over 42 percent from the field, while Centenary shot just under 29 percent for the half. Wilson was 8-of-14 from the floor for a game-high 21 points, including tying a season-high 5-of-9 output from beyond the arc. Hafeli posted 17 points, while Nicole Piggott (Pewamo, Mich.) recorded 10. The Golden Grizzlies bettered the Ladies on the boards, 49-35, getting a career-high seven rebounds from Joya Puryear (Detroit, Mich.), while Leigh Tully (Sarnia, Ontario) chipped in with a season-high six boards. Also scoring double digits for Centenary was Aleksic with 11 and Laura Kizyte with 10. Wilkins paced the team with seven rebounds, while she and teammate Van???esha Brabson each had two blocks in the loss. Oakland finishes out the remaining two games of the regular-season in the O???Rena, first hosting IUPUI Saturday, Feb. 26, at 3:30 pm when the Golden Grizzlies will honor seniors Ashley Holenka (Shadyside, Ohio), Petra Manakova (Prague, Czech Republic), Batcha and Tully. In the team???s final game before heading to the Mid-Con tournament, OU hosts conference-leading Western Illinois at 7:00 pm Monday, Feb. 28.
